Are You Ready for RV Season?

30 April 2019

As the weather starts to become warmer across northern New Jersey, avid campers and RVers will be looking at getting their RV’s and camping gear out for the season! RV owners know how amazing owning an RV can be, but they also know how much maintenance is involved. In fact, RV’s involve such a large amount of prep work that it can be easy to lose track of what there is to do.

We’ve put together a quick list of things to do when you pull your RV out for the season. Whether you are an experienced RV’r or are new to RVing, make sure to cover these areas before hitting the road in your vehicle.

Check the Tires

A good place to start is with the component that holds your RV up. Check to make sure that the tires are in good and safe condition after storage; look out for any cracking or flat spots. Check the tire pressure and pump if needed. It is also a good idea to make sure the lug nuts are torqued properly.

Go Through the Water System

This is especially important if you have antifreeze to keep your water tank, pump and pipelines from freezing over the winter months. Be sure to flush this out before using!

Once the system is flushed make sure that your system is loaded with water, and is working properly without disastrous leaks or mechanical failures. This is a vital step to take before plugging your RV into shore power, as it makes sure the water heater doesn’t enter into electric mode.

Check the Generator

If your generator was flushed of fuel before going into storage, inspect it to make sure everything is functioning before filling and turning on. If your generator still has fuel from the previous season, it is a good idea to flush that fuel out and replace with fresh fuel.

Go Over Seals & Appliances

Be sure to have a good inspection at all of the seals, and repair or replace any that look like they may be starting to fail. The last thing you want on a camping trip is for a major leak to spring up from nowhere!

Appliances such as the stove and refrigerator should also be inspected to ensure that they are still in good working condition. These components go through a significant amount of vibration and movement during regular driving, and can develop issues when powered off for months at a time. Inspect all of your appliances to be sure everything is still in check.

Give Your Paint A Good Wash & Wax

Once the inside and vital components are taken care of, give your RV a good wash and apply some wax or paint sealant to protect the paint from UV rays and water spots. There are special protect-ant products available for rubber and plastic components which are effective and maintaining colour and condition.
