Could Your Kitchen Benefit from De-Cluttering?

11 May 2018

In many Paterson homes, the kitchen is often the family gathering area where meals are enjoyed, drinks are had among great conversation, and of course meals are prepared. With all of that means that it’s also a room in your home that can become messy and cluttered pretty easily if you’re not careful; not only do they have multiple appliances and gadgets, but because it is a high traffic area where many of us find ourselves hanging around, we find ourselves leaving items that don’t even belong in the kitchen to begin with!

As the home owner, with some simple steps and habits in place you can maintain an orderly and clutter-free kitchen; it is often just knowing how to approach it.

Here are some quick tips in relation to achieving a neat and clean kitchen that you can enjoy without the distraction of extra “stuff”.

Get Rid of Anything that Doesn’t Belong

To start, take a look at what items you see in your kitchen that clearly aren’t “kitchen material”.  A good place to begin? Your junk drawer or cabinet is an excellent starting point if you have one. As you clear out the clutter, consider whether or not that item or document serves significance for your kitchen. If it doesn’t, throw it out or choose an appropriate spot to store it than doesn’t involve your junk drawer. Next, go through each cabinet and drawer and remove everything if possible. This is a great way to see exactly what dishes and utensils you currently have in your kitchen. Gather up some empty boxes and label one for donation, one to keep, and one for the garbage. You can even make a “maybe” pile if you are uncertain. When you sort through items in an efficient and organized manner, it’s a much easier process to rework your kitchen so everything is organized again, but this time sans the extra unnecessary clutter.

Use Specific Spaces for Like Items

Very few things in your home can be more frustrating than an unorganized kitchen. When searching for your favorite pot or pan, it can be extremely upsetting to find exactly what’s needed to cook that meal, when items aren’t arranged and stored properly. When you create specific spaces in the kitchen for like items, there’s no question as to where a particular kitchen item is the next time you go searching.  For instance, consider a cabinet or cupboard that is solely for pans and cookware and a separate area meant for mixing bowls and baking material. Designated areas that are visibly organized, will allow you to enjoy your kitchen a lot more as you won’t waste time sorting through unnecessary mess. A clean kitchen is a happy kitchen!

Consider Letting it Go

In most cases, the primary reason that a kitchen gets too cluttered is because there are far too many items in the kitchen that aren’t being used. Remember that you really only need a couple of mixing bowls and definitely only one toaster. When decluttering your kitchen, take a close look at your kitchen items. If you decide that certain things haven’t been used in months, this is a sure sign that it is time to let go of it or donate it. This will help you to free up space in the kitchen for items you need and use on a regular basis.
